Slaves (Freeing)

Vicencio Cortes del rey sells Esclava mulata- Josepha Morales- to Antonia de Amparan for 300 pesos. Before the transfer of title is completed. Valerio Cortes del rey (Brother of Vicencio) appears with 300 pesos and demands the liberty of Maria Josepha, as he wants to marry her. It develops Valerio obtained the 300 pesos from Maria Josepha, who stole them from Fransisco Colza. The case then changes status from civil to criminal. It is not resolved. (P. Hayes) (1977)

Ramon Joseph de la Vega grants manumission to 3 esclavas- Phelipa, Lucia and Antonia and to 1 esclavo- Joseph Joachin Veedor (son of Lucia). The Esclavo had to buy his freedom for 80 pesos. (P. Hayes) (1977)

Vicencio frees his 3 year old slave, Juana, a Mulata Blanca. Probably his daughter. (T. Barnes) (1977)

Clara de Lima grants freedom to her slave, Juan Lazaro, a mulato age 46 years. No money is involved. (R. Perez) (1977)

Carta de Libertad of mulatta slave de color cocho named Maria Victoria, age 20, whose freedom was purchased for 340 pesos by her Husband Cayetano de Porras. (T. Pedro de Hierro, acting as executor for the estate of Luisa de Hierro y Zerezeda, presents her testament. The estate included 5 slaves who are all to be inherited by Dona Luisa's Sister. She stipulates that upon the death of her Sister a Mulata named Dominga is to be set free. (R. Perez) (1977)

Maria Magdalena, mulatta slave, petitions gobernador Barrutia to force her master, Manuel Hermosino, Vecino of San Phelipe, to deliver her Carta de Libertad. Hermosino paid 200 pesos by padre Joseph de Robles to secure Maria's manumission. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

In her last will and testament, Ana de Benabides states that upon her death two of her slaves will be set free- Manuel Salvador, age 11, and Joseph Joachin Lopez, age 5. The Former will have to pay the amount set by the executor of her estate, the latter is to be placed in the care of his aunt who must pay 100 pesos for his freedom. (R. Perez) (1977)

Juana Xaviera de Ugarte grants freedom to Miguel de Seballos, mulato, aged 26. No money is involved in the transaction. (R. Perez) (1977)

Diego de Vilchis is a wealthy man. His testament lists nine slaves, all of whom he gives to various relatives and friends. The one exception is a Mulata, named Ynes, the Mother of all his other mulatos, who is set free because of her long and faithful service. the inventario, frames 1943-1960, includes the following prices for slaves- (R. Perez) (1977) additional slave sales- Mulata, 60 yrs., 150 pesos. Negro, 28 yrs., 300 pesos. Mulato, 24 yrs., 300 pesos. Mulata, 25 years, 300 pesos. Mulato, 2 Months, 100 pesos. Mulato, 2 years, 150 pesos. Mulata, 11 years, 280 pesos. Mulata, 12 years, 300 pesos.
