This is an informe written by fr. Joseph Soler to the guardian of the colegio de Santa Cruz, M.r.p. Romauldo Cartegena, concerning the missions of Pimeria Alta expressing a difference of opinion with fr. Antonio de los Reyes. Both fr. Juan Diaz and fr. Juan Congoll add a postscript agreeing with the views of fr. Joseph Soler. This is an original document bearing the autographs of fr. Joseph Soler, fr. Juan Diaz and fr. Juan Congoll. Summary
Palou sends Verger a letter detailing a report on the state of the missions in the peninsula of California. Four points are stressed- 1) four missions should be placed between San Fernando and San Diego, 2) the Dominicans should not found missions on the peninsula, as it is not good to have two ^religions^ in the same land, 3) fr. Palou arrived in San Xavier to quelch an uprising of the Indians - here certain details are given, and 4) the military, especially gov. Don Phelipe Barri is hurting the operations of the missions. Alos comments that the presidios function as markets; the Misioneros (Jesuits) do not comply with their spiritual obligations but rather with economic ones (noting that all their missions are located near gold or silver mines).
