Manuel Felipe of Rio Chico files complaint against a Negro for abusing, provoking him and against Cura of Rio Chico for not helping him force his wife to live with him como Es obligada a el Estado de Nuestro conjugal. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Gobernador Quigue and Indian naturales of Curcurpe bring suit against Francisco Montes, alias "el Pintor," a Pima Indian who married a Cucurpe woman, annexed much land around a small plot she owned north of Pueblo, and managed to win control of Cucurpe's source of irrigation water. El Pintor accused of: 1) embargoing water, thereby causing many fields in Cucurpe to fail; 2) engaging in the malas costumbres de sacar vino (bacanora?), getting many Indians drunk; 3) assaulting padre Luis Velarde, causing el Pintor to be fugitive in Pimeria Alta before he came to Cucurpe. When asked by a priest to stop making vino, el Pintor replied that "cuando todos lo dexaran lo dexaria el." Much information on land tenure, title registration, etc. Reference to estancia del padre quino 4 leagues upriver from Cucurpe. Criminal case against group of Vaqueros, some of them Mulattos, accused of killing 4 Indians from San Pedro de Conchos Pueblo with macheto, media Luna. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Begins a policy statement of governor on mulattoes, Indians, Negroes and all slaves. Warning against mistreatment of colored and calling for testimony either open or secret. Sets out proper punishment terms for jail and fines. Note that is was read aloud in Plaza. Pedro and Melchor break into fr. Simons house (Juan also involved). Juan, Pedro, Melchor jailed. Final settlement appears as accounting of value of goods taken (60 pesos) and implies payment. (R. Davis) (1975)

This residencia turns up some dirt- the local Scribe has been living without the benefits of marriage with a free Mulata woman, resulting in at least one child. Sequiera is reprimanded for letting this sort of thing go on and the Scribe is fined and fired. A good, clear residencia. (T. Barnes) (1975)

An interesting case which provides some insight into cross-cultural attitudes toward marital relations. The case concerns the murder of one Indian by another, the quarrel revolving around a woman. Testimony is provided through interpreters; the sentence was death by hanging; and records of the execution order (in the public Plaza) are included. (C. Needham) (1975)

In response to the illegal sale of alcoholic beverages to Indians, Negroes and mulatos, a fine of 100 pesos is established and a threat to shut down any store involved. Apparently a wide-spread practice, causing trouble from drunken individuals. (T. Barnes) (1977)
