Military Promotions

Manrrique is nominated for lieutenant to presidio de San Buenaventura; Mateos, for alferes to tercera compania volante; Elquea, for alferes to compania de dragones provinciales. Chacon and others are given retirement permission and cedulas de Invalidos from companias provinciales de Sonora and California. Nava asks a file dated from October 21, 1792, concerning movement of peoples from presidio de Tubac to presidio de Tucson, in order to solve con instruccion y conocimiento some problems between Indians and presidio del Tucson's peoples about ownership of lands and water. Potau is given the title of governor of provincias de la Nueva Vizcaya. (R.Gomez, January 1989)

Petition of Gracia de Invalidos by Urioste in February, 1793. Borica proposed for military promotion to Zarin, Camarena and Madrid for Segundo alferes in presidio del Carrizal; Zarin is given the promotion in January, 1793. Urrea and Franco are nominated for la tenencia (lieutenant) de la compania presidial de San Agustin del Tupson; Urrea is given the employment in January, 1793. Nava nominates Maynes for capitan de la segunda compania volante; the promotion is accepted in February, 1793. Notification of run away of Indian known as capitan Chiquito from presidio de Arizpe. Capitan Chiquito, and some other Indians and soldiers, are said to have been killed by two bears; same folio mentions Grimarest death without specifying whether he or not he was killed by the Indians. Petition from Gomez in order to obtain Gracia de Invalidos, in feb,. 1793. Nava sends updated map of provincias de Nueva Vizcaya (February, 1793) to virrey. Perez Fernandez is given Alferez promotion for compania del presidio de San Francisco in January, 1793. Diaz de Solorsano is nominated for lieutenant in la septima compania del Cuerpo de milicias de dragones provinciales del Principe, in January, 1793. Nava reports the condition in which the sacred ornaments are, due to the extranamiento de los Jesuitas in a village (whose name is not mentioned). (R.Gomez, January 1989)

Nava notifies to virrey of battle between Apaches and teniente Mesa's group which took place in Parage las hornilas; Maynes submits a written report of the battle. Petitions from Nicolas Zarin, Mariano Urrea, and de la Sierra y Cienfuegos to virrey to become alferes, teniente and capitan. Petitions from Abril, Bustamante and Gastelum of compania presidial de Cerro Gordo in order to obtain cedulas de Invalidos (12 cedulas without specifying names are attached). de la Cierra y Cienfuegos asks to become capitan of presidio San Carlos. Nava asks the virrey to submit de la Cierra y Cienfuegos' to a period of observation in order for him to mende su conducta, modere el genio, aprendiendo a obedecer y llenar las funciones de su empleo... Petitions concerning payments to soldiers, employment proposals to companias volantes, and retirement petitions. Diego de Borica seeks the office of governor of Sonora and Manuel sahagun seeks office of governor of Nueva Mexico. Sargent Moreno is given directions to take 92 Indian prisoners from Pilar de Conchos to Mexico City. Nava asks the virrey to equal salaries of tenientes and alferes de las companias presidiales y volantes in provincias de Nueva Mexico and Sonora. Nava notifies virrey of letters and oficios received. Vaamonde suggests qualified men to fill vacant positions of Segundo teniente and Segundo Alferez of Punta de Lampazos. Included are comandante Castro's endorsements. (J. H. Ochs, October 1988)

Vaamonde, governor of Nuevo Leon requests promotion to grade of army infantry Colonel (ff. 125-128). Perez, priest asks comandante general for vacant capellania at Lampazos; includes Nava's certificacion naming Perez to post (ff. 129-132). Garza, soldier at Lampazos requests discharge; includes filiacion (ff. 133,135). Pena, soldier at Lampazos requests discharge due to disability. Request denied. (ff. 135-136). Saenz, sargeant of flying company of Lampazos, having served 6 years at Espiritu Santo requests discharge due to ill health. Request approved (f.137). Flores, soldier of aforementioned flying company, stationed at Santa Rosa requests 30 days leave to check on family. Request approved (f. 138). Cruz, soldier of same flying company makes similar request (f. 139).

Medio cabildo from 5 towns in Nuevo Santander request that troops be picked to guard against raids from indios barbaros (f.76). Rafael Ponce, settler in Nuevo Leon requests Colonel Castro's assistance in expediting civil suit involving captains Zozaya, Lacomva (ff. 78,79). Olazaran, Cabo of second flying company requests promotion (ff. 80,81). Quijas, Alferez of second flying company requests sick leave, complains of abusive behavior of captain Murgier (ff. 82-106). Tomas Sanches, Former captain and Juez of Laredo requests goce de Laredo, Indian depredations suffered by settlers (ff. 107-119). Margil Gonzalez, Cabo of second flying company requests retirement due to injuries sustained in battle with Indians. (ff. 120-122).

Jose Ramon Diaz de Bustamante, captain of third flying company requests promotion to rank of lieutenant Coronel (ff. 65, 66). Sargent of first flying company requests discharge due to injury of right leg (f. 67). Serna, soldier of first company requests discharge due to pains in legs and arms (f. 68). Cavo of third company request 40 days leave to take care of personal business in Coahuila (f. 69). Soldier of second company requests permission to marry (f. 70). Ortiz, soldier of second company requests 60 days leave (f. 71). Martinez asks discharge in order that he may care for his sisters and elderly parents (f. 72). Olzaran, Cabo of second company requests discharge due to illness (f. 73). Galvan, Alferez of third company asks for three months leave in order that he may visit elderly Mother (f. 74). (J. H. A Series of letters concerning events affecting the tercera and mules in lacombas possession, documenting number and description of horses, monthly troop strength and location reports as well as military rolls, health report for Martinez, death of governor, custom, and problems of borrowing mules and horses from civilian population for transport of military equipment, pardon given to Gutierrez, settlement of debts with Indians, edict setting policy on treatment of ministers of tribunals, promotion of Soto and subsequent dismissal due to alcoholic problems followed by testimony from witnesses of resulting derelictions of duty and finally his replacement with Venavidez, formal charges lodged against Soto, dicharge of bortrego and replacement with Palos, desire to dismiss Puga, shipment of sealed documents to governor, enlistment of Arocha to replace Soto, informing Ugalde of preparation for campaign, recent theft of mules and horses from mission and statement from priests in charge, problems of acquisition of mules through purchase or legal seizure due to unavailability of said animal, troop movement and destination as campaign looms near, temporarily filling a comission for teniente de justicia with Cossio, Galban handing over command of company to Lacomba, promotions of Echeagarrey ands Gutierrez de la Cueva to assistants to the inspector, Gutierrez de la Cueva assigned the job of shipping arms, orders requesting movement of troops to a more strategic area, impracticality of this due to poor topography, orders to send 100 horses and lacombas reluctance because of Lipanes tribe, filing of credit and debit report for previous year, agricultural activities of mission, late arrival of Arocha and Puga. A Series of letters primarily from Lacomba to Ugalde but also from others concerning matters affecting the tercera compania record and invalid status of Paredes and Buedo, requests to leave the company for a meeting, requests to fill vacancies, transfer of money to Ugalde, inquiries into arrival and late arrival of documents, clemency for 2 deserters, unfounded rumors of Indian attacks, the number of horses and mules at his disposal, Ugaldes disposition to expel all those who seek retirement before an imminent campaign, the difficulty in conducting a census among a hostile Indian population, Puga's desire to have his two sons serve in the adjoining companies, a dubious Tale of a Lipanes Indian attack told to him, reports of armament inventory, adverse affect of Weather on agricultural production in his area, prosecution of deserters, orders permitting the virrey special powers, use of a civilian at a military outpost in a mission, debts owed among the troops, capture of two Indians and transfer to Ugalde, conflict between two soldiers that had been quelled, promotions of Errera, Soto, and Cossio and the resulting vacancies and salary raises.
