Vargas takes possession of presidio of Pasaje (f. 327). Virrey Rubi's charge of improper presidio administration (f. 329). Ruiz de Maranon named by Vargas to replace Rodaliega as sargent nomination of subordinate presidio officers, payment of cash wages to these officers (ff. 332-333). Virrey approves nomination of sargent, lieutenant of Pasaje (f. 334). Rubi thanks virrey for acceding to his request that Pedriza replace Vargas as captain of Pasaje. Included is copy of decree ordering this change in command, plus Pedriza's letter of thanks to virrey. (J. H. Ochs, July 1988)

Summary
Ugalde accuses Menchaca of incest, gambling, and sale and consumption of prohibited beverages; suggests that although Menchaca deserves life-long banishment to Mariana islands, Menchaca will only be fired and exiled to eastern provinces for 10 years. Ugalde orders Menchaca's arrest; details of trial ensue in which Lacomba complains to Revilla Gigedo that Ugalde has falsely accused Menchaca. Includes several indices to trial correspondence. (S. Letter to viceroy with account by Gallardo of exploration in California, pacification of Indians, discovery of los Angeles bay, establishment and construction of Santa Gertrudis mission; his return and imprisonment by capitan of garrison in conjunction with two missionaries and his ruin when captain of garrison stole his papers and wife's jewelry; missionaries promised him death if truth was ever known.
