Fiscal Affairs

Series of letters concerning division of New Spain and creation of capitania general de Provincias Internas under the command of Croix. Discussion of all articles of royal decree for capitania, and its effect on governing of New Spain. Other letters concern viceroy's orders to officials in charge of collecting taxes and treasury department to inform Croix on a monthly Basis of the financial status of their respective offices. Viceroy also informs a number of bishoprics of Croix appointment and that he should be informed on all aspects of missions, as well of the right to appoint curatos. there is also discussion that Croix will not be in charge, for the time being, of the superintendencia general de lo gubernativo y judicial because this requires permanent residency as well as various offices equipped to handle various matters. Croix only requests use of funds from all taxable products in order to begin pacification and development of region. (J. Tapia, November 1987)

Correspondence concerning lack of revenue in northern provinces, contributing to shortage of food for soldiers fighting Indians and rebels. Arredondo calls on patriotic citizens for donations, and admonishes cabildo eclesiastico de Monterrey for not contributing to war effort. Also, accuses Obispado de Monterrey of not paying Diezmos. Routine correspondence concerning petition by Josefa Brickdale to Caxas de Saltillo to receive deceased Husband's pension. Includes repetitive Series of documents concerning naming of Echandia as governor of Nuevo Santander and Head of Monte Pio, with details of duties and salary. Arredondo informs virrey of news from Consul Fatio of war plans by U.s. against Spain. Fatio cites outraged announcements in U.s. Newspapers of death of Perry and Gordon at hands of Spanish troops, and advertisements in U.s. soliciting population of Texas by american families. Correspondence to virrey also includes complaints against Royuela of not following orders. (A. Tukey,October 1988)

Repetitious Series of documents concerning retirement of Cordero as governor of Texas and appointment of Pedro de Herrera as interim governor. Herrera makes numerous appeals to receive full governor's salary, but finally awarded half salary. (A. Tukey, February 1989)

Concern granting of 40 pesos to Garcia by real hacienda to cover travel expenses for remainder of journey interrupted by illness. (A. Tukey, January 1989).

Documents concern flooding that occurred along Lower Salado and Rio Grande rivers in Nuevo Leon. Includes detailed testimonies of loss of life, homes, crops and livestock for most heavily damaged settlements, along with final tabulation of money compensation to be awarded to each resident by real hacienda. Gobernador sends troops into area to prevent Indian looting and to help with reconstruction. Several towns relocated away from River banks. Affected region made exempt from tax payments and Diezmos until recovered from disaster. (A. Tukey, January 1989)

Mention of libro de caudales and libro de distribuciones y gastos que Se Han originado en las Casas que estoy fabricando en Este Pueblo de Bacoachi, Ano de 1787 by Nava, Escalante, summarizing accounts. Lists of rations, costs of each. All certified by treasury officials.
