Crimes (Theft)

Quintana accuses Truxillo of stealing two of his horses, and starts legal proceedings against him. With the ensuing investigation, however, it turns out that the horses were taken by two Indian youths, one of them a servant of Truxillo's, who were attempting to flee to another area. Eventually, Truxillo and Quintana come to a settlement, at the behest of Mogollon, who also orders that the Indians be Charged with paying the cost of the suit, both legal and personal, by laboring for a number of years, Andres for his master, Truxillo; and, Xptobal, under captain Balverde, in whose custody he is placed. The virrey has received news of charges of extortion involving the lieutenant of the gobernador. He instructs the governor to initiate such proceedings as he may deem necessary. (Lloyd Kendall) (1980)

Complaint against Juan de Tafoya by Nicolas Ortiz. Ortiz claims that Tafoya 'usurped' certain familiar possessions and removed from Ortiz' house an Apache Indian woman - Ortiz' servant. Tafoya is the Husband of Ortiz' deceased mother-in-law, and Ortiz claims that his wife (Juana Baca) has legal right to the possessions, being executor of will of the deceased (Albacea). Capitan Juan Uribarri accuses the soldier Jacinto Sanchez of stealing a Mule. Sanchez argues that it was given to him. (R. Saba) (1980)

Carlos Rodriques was ordered exiled from Santa Fe to San Bernadillo for crime of adultery. Addenda note that he violated his exile and subsequently rec'd 3 years with the public works in addition to having his feet shackled. Old record notes that in 1695 he rec'd 200 lashes for being a thief. (R. Saba) (1980)

On 3 aug, 1697 Nicolas Ramires, accused of stealing 4 sheep and killing an Indian, sentenced to 2 months of service in N public works; to pay Joseph Antonio Hernandes for the sheep; and fined 20 pesos plus court costs. On 10 March 1698, Ramires was re-sentenced for misbehavior to 3 yrs more in public works, with irons on his feet. (R. Saba) (1980)

Antonio Sisneros brings civil suit against Lorenzo Madrid for taking a Mule without paying him. Sisneros wins favorable judgement. (R. Saba) (1980)

Complaint by Antonia de Manzanares against Sebastian Canseco for robbery of trastes, jicara de Apache con Mais, etc. Sebastian sentenced to pay court and jail costs. (would not be free until did so). (R. Saba) (1980)

Vargas sends out Antonio Zisnos to find some lost corn. Zisnos finds two Indians, questions them and finds that the corn has been deposited in a nearby Arroyo. One Indian escapes and is shot trying to swim the flooded River. The bags of corn are returned to Santa Fe. (John Zilboorg) (1980)
