Dirucaca, an Indian of Pecuries, is accused of multiple her daughters; of practicing witchcraft, reputedly involving the deaths of a number of persons, including some women who rejected his illicit advances; of inciting the natives of his town to ignore and defy the teachings of the Christian priests. There is some convincing evidence against him, and he is imprisoned. But, then, it is discovered that he knows the location of a silver mine. In exchange for showing the Spanish authorities the site of the mine, the charges against dirucaca are dropped and he is released; with the stipulations that he can no longer reside in Pecuries, and that he pay the procedural costs of the suit against him; (twenty one pesos). Diego de Vargas informs the viceroy of the precarious among the natives; the settler population has been decimated by an epidemic, with the loss of Vital personnel such as soldiers, and others of frontier experience; there are insufficient domestic animals for the working of the land, resulting in great hardship for the residents, making them susceptible to sickness; the discovery of a metal deposit, hoped to attract immigrants, has produced disappointing results. Diego de Vargas writes to viceroy transmitting facts concerning lack of supplies (agricultural and military) in certain missions and presidios. The information comes from fray Francisco Vargas' letters. He explains situation of families and lack of proper tools for irrigation and sewing crops. Don Diego de Vargas has for sometime seen and been made aware of the taking of arms out of the Villa of Santa Fee to be sold to the Indians. He issues a ban prohibiting this action. He has this carried out by Sebastian Rodriguez, who announces it out loud to a great crowd that has gathered in the area where this arms problem has arisen. (John Zilboorg) (1980)
