Summary
Communication of royal order of 31 August 1801, which denies, request of the Cardinal patriarch, vicar general of the armies, that suggests changes in power of officers in denying marriage licenses to their troops. Vicar general wants special tribunal set up to hear Cases of those denied. King rules that any review decision rests with respective military inspectors. Good example of state control over marriage. The disreputable fellow, Mariano Baca, tells everyone that Maria Manuela de la Luz Romero has consented to be his wife and that they have slept together. To save her honor Maria proves to a church official she is yet a virgin and brings civil suit against Baca, which she wins. He gets nine months of jail in process and given court costs. (R.
