Reviewing situation of fray Francisco de Yrarabal's ill health and great distance between pueblos of Alona, Acoma and la Laguna in province of Zuni, and the need for a missionary in Alona in particular due to threat of Moqui Indians, governor Flores Mogollon appoints fray Antonio de Miranda to the post. Viceroy Linares reviews reports from captain Naranjo that French are threatening New Mexico frontier and that governor Mogollon is apparently hesitant to act. Viceroy orders report of Naranjo and fray Miranda to be forwarded with no interference from governor. (R. Davis) (1980)

The governor takes an opinion Poll among the military, and priests of Nueva Mexico, concerning whether or not certain old, Pagan customs of the native Indians should be proscribed. The military, generally, seen in favor of such proscription. The priests, however, are divided in their views. Some say yes to proscription; some are non-committal, saying that the viceroy should order as he sees fit; others urge caution, pointing out that the issue is extremely delicate. And, that the natives should be weaned gradually and carefully away from their traditions, as abrupt prohibition could result in defiance, violent resistance and uprising. Residents of Santa Maria de Grado petition for a priest to be assigned to them. Fray Augustin de Colina denies the petition saying that the minister closest to Santa Maria will have to care for their needs. There is a lack of priests and thus the one assigned to Santa Cruz will care for Santa Maria also. (R. Saba) (1980)

Replying to letters and informes from the gov. General of new mesico and other Santa Fe officials, viceroy issues a set of instructions relative to the province. They cover soldiers' salaries, defensive wars against Indians, aid to newly created Villa de Alburquerque, and recognition of governor's good work with the Indians. (R. Saba) (1980)

To study conditions of settlers and especially presidiales in New Mexico in response to letters for aid from gobernador general. Details deplorable conditions and makes recommendations to king.
