In this Series of documents it seems Domingo de Apressa was commissioned to put a ^stairway^ in one of his mines (San Francisco). The stairway proved to be poorly constructed and collapsed and Toribio is sueing Domingo. Each present a witness for their account. Justicia Martinez finds Domingo guilty and orders him to pay the costs for building a new stairway (^escalera^) plus a 20 peso Fee to the court. This document deals with a debt of 300 pesos gold owned by Juan del Rio, who is obligated to pay 155 pesos in twenty days, after which a two pesos (gold) a day fine will be levied. In this document Joseph de Santa Cruz declares that he will pay Don Diego de Cristiesca y Vasconcelos 600 pesos in gold (common) for ^crowning^ (diadenabidad) or opening his mine, and upon completion of project will present Don Diego with other goods including a female Negro slave named ^beatris^ of 12 or 13 years. A payment of 2 gold pesos a day extra will be added to the principle if the cigeral payment is late. Juan Martin Linero claims that a Negro slave of Pedro Ortiz, and 2 other Indians (of Bustamante and Luza), convinced his Indian servant Juan Barnabe to run away with them to become workers at the mine of capt. Alonso Martin de la Mediana. Juan Martin Linero claims that Barnabe is working off a debt and has 2 years of servitude yet to go. Diego has to sell 2 haciendas for debts owed to Toribio and the state - the inventory is valuable. There were 14 slaves involved - Negroes, mulatos, chinese and Indians. However, this is a story befitting the talents of a Perry Mason. It turns out that goliano is the victim of crime. Fernandez has joined forces with Melchor de Valdez, a.m. to rob goliano. In the course of the investigation (a long one, this document is 470 pages long), a mercury ring is uncovered - Melchor de Valdez has been siphoning it off and selling it to mines - making easier and cheaper for them in return for silver.
