Joseph petitions the official of the Caxa of San Diego, capitan Juan Pelayo, to purchase 6 sites ganados majores which are part of the Indian village of San Ignacio. He cites fact that the decline in population has left these lands now unowned by Indians. The Indians are shared encomienda by Antonio de Oliveras and Francisco del Villar. In testimony capitan Joaquin tells story of how capitan Manuel was apparently murdered by 4 sons of Luissa who visited the home of Manuel. A Series of 4 questions is drawn up and given to Luissa and her sons. Testimony also by Francisco de Ojeda. A doctors report on body of Manuel finally declares he died of old age and that the Indians are innocent. (R. Davis) (1975)

Summary
Begins a policy statement of governor on mulattoes, Indians, Negroes and all slaves. Warning against mistreatment of colored and calling for testimony either open or secret. Sets out proper punishment terms for jail and fines. Note that is was read aloud in Plaza. Pedro and Melchor break into fr. Simons house (Juan also involved). Juan, Pedro, Melchor jailed. Final settlement appears as accounting of value of goods taken (60 pesos) and implies payment. (R. Davis) (1975)

Canito Charged with murder and robbery as leader of combined band of Indians (Pimas, Jocomes, xuma and Janos). His state appointed lawyer does well, getting the sentence reduced from death to 2 years at hard labor, by appealing to the governor. An excellent example of Spanish judicial system and how Indians were treated in it. Part of his salvation is his conversion to catholocism while in jail. (T. Barnes) (1976)
