Padre Agustin de Campos al padre Marcos de Somoza. Reponse to Somoza's letter of July 29, 1729.

Serial Number

Author(s)
Campos, Augustin de (S.J.)
Date

Documentation
San Ignacio. August 1, 1729. Letter. Original. Signed.
Summary
In response to Somoza's letter asking Campos to send 200 Pima auxiliaries with supplies to gobernador Huidobro, Campos replies that he discussed matter with Pima leader Thuronic and son, gobernador of Pitiquin, who told him they had to plant beans and clean, sow, irrigate and weed their fields or their families would go hungry. Campos notes that Pimas had campaigned against Seris Tepocas on coast under capitan Alvarez de la Bandera, and that pueblos who received injuries from Tiburones should finance and staff their own campaign. Notes various campaigns in which he served as chaplain and states that since Pima auxiliaries not paid, they should at least receive food and mules to carry supplies while on campaign. Campos doesn't directly refuse Somoza, but claims Huidobro's demand for auxiliaries with own supplies is untimely and unjust. Excellent document. (T. Sheridan) (1978)
